Writing prompt: your character's shopping list

Any successful writer will tell you it’s important to know your characters really well. Not just their biographical details but literally everything – even the things that might not feel relevant to the story. Who was their best friend when they were four years old? When was the last time they swam in the ocean? Do they like musicals?

I was looking at lists of questions to ask your characters, but then I started thinking about lists more generally. And then I thought… what would a shopping list say about a character?

So, here’s your prompt: write the shopping list for your character. What do they usually buy? What do they need to buy in particular this week? What must they absolutely not forget to buy?

We can comment on each other’s shopping lists, to let one another know what we think their character must be like based on their consumer choices. Hopefully this will help to think about characters more deeply. That kind of deep thinking flows into writing in unexpected, unexplainable ways. Remember to leave us a link to your blog post, or simply write your shopping list in the comments.

Okay… let’s go shopping!!!

Cool idea, I'll have to test it out with my characters! Thanks for the prompt :)
