Writing prompt: no fear Shakespeare

Have you seen the new Lion King teaser trailer???!!!!

Did you know that The Lion King is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet? And The Lion King II is based on Romeo and Juliet! Many of Shakespeare’s plays have been adapted into books, films and even other plays (West Side Story, anyone?). In fact, Shakespeare himself adapted many of his plays from traditional folk stories, myths, legends and historical events. His works are a popular choice for adaptation because they are well-known, and often revolve around universal themes (like love, vengeance, loyalty) and familiar character/narrative tropes (like the star-crossed lovers, mistaken-identity, and love triangles).

What’s your favourite Shakespeare play? Maybe you could have a go at adapting it into a story? How would you change it to appeal to a modern, bookish audience? You could chose to set it in the contemporary world, outer space, or an animal kingdom. You could stick close to the original story or take the characters on an exciting new adventure.
