Writing prompt: newspaper headlines

YOUNG WRITER CAN’T THINK OF WHAT TO WRITE NEXT

Want to write a story but just… don’t have a story to tell?

Find the nearest newspaper to you (or just hop to an online news site) and pick a headline. DON’T READ ANYTHING ABOUT THE STORY BEYOND THE HEADLINE.

It’s your job to write a short story that matches the headline you have chosen. You could even write it in a newsy tone of voice, or write a news report.

Don’t have a newspaper close at hand? Here are some headlines I found in today’s paper alone:

UGG BOOT FACTORY TO BECOME HIPSTER APARTMENTS

WOULD YOU PAY $22,000 FOR A DOG? THIS MAN DID. HERE’S WHY

AUSTRALIAN ASTRONOMERS FIND A COSMIC MONSTER THAT’S GROWING FAST

Seriously! Headlines are a goldmine for ideas. It might also be fun to return to your newspaper article, once your own story is finished, to see how close to the truth you were.
