The Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers 2020
Are you scribbling away poetically? Researching an essay? Immersed in the world of short fiction? Writing furiously day and night or tinkering with words in your spare time? Well no matter what your wordy scribbling habits may be, this is the writing competition that might inspire you to brush off the dusty writing notebook and get polishing those sentences until they gleam!
The Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers is a developmental award open to Australian secondary school-aged students. Shortlisted writers get the opportunity to receive mentorship from an established author. This year, the Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers Mentor is Will Kostakis.

The prize, sponsored by Hachette Australia and administered by Express Media, recognises writing excellence in three categories: Fiction, Creative Nonfiction and Poetry.
All fifteen shortlisted writers will:
- Be invited to participate in a writing masterclass
- Attend an exclusive Q&A with Will Kostakis
- Attend a special showcase event in October 2020
- Receive a book pack of YA Titles courtesy of Hachette Australia
The prize winner in each category will receive:
- $500 courtesy of Hachette Australia
- publication of their work on the Express Media website
- their names and an acknowledgement printed in Voiceworks, Australia’s premier youth literary journal.
The prize is judged by representatives from Hachette Australia and Express Media.
Entries are now open and close at 11:59pm AEST on Monday 17 August 2020.
Go to the Express Media website for more information and submissions.
