‘Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.’ – Groucho Marx

Party time October!

Breaking the ice for our new arrivals

Welcome to members old and new! Party time posts are an opportunity to congregate, meet each other and share a bit more about our mutual book obsessions.

If you’re new, don’t be afraid to comment and introduce yourself to other members. This is a friendly corner of the internet where geekery and fandoms of all things book reign supreme. If you’re into reading and writing, you’ve found your people here.

Today I have set three questions for us all to respond to. As always, you can respond to one or all three:

Love to hate you

Who are the protagonists you love to hate? Which character is the best bad guy, the one that makes you full of rage at the same time as making you admire them just a bit more than you’d like to admit?

Would you rather…

Read your favourite book for eternity, never being able to read anything else… OR… read all the books you like but never be able to re-read any of them no matter how much you enjoy them?

Cliche much?

What is your most hated cliche or trope in a book? Is there a particular phrase that makes you grind your teeth any time you read it, or a plot point that makes you want to throw your book against the wall?

Can’t wait to read your replies.

1. he's not a protagonist but I really, really love and hate Prince Cardan from The Cruel Prince by Holly Black.
2. I would definitely choose to read all the books I like because I think no matter how much I love a book I don't think I could read it for eternity.
3. The plot line I absolutely hate is: girl has best friend that is boy, boy falls in love with girl, girl says no then realizes too late that she loves boy, by this point boy already has girlfriend, by the end they end up together. It was good the first 4 times but after that, eh. (with the exception of Emma and Jules from The Dark Artifices, obviously)

Who are the protagonists you love to hate? <-- definitely Jace from The Mortal Instruments
Which character is the best bad guy the one that makes you full of rage at the same time as making you admire them just a bit more than you’d like to admit? <-- The Darkling from The Grishaverse

Read your favourite book for eternity, never being able to read anything else… OR… read all the books you like but never be able to re-read any of them no matter how much you enjoy them? <--Never reread

What is your most hated cliche or trope in a book? <-- INSTA LOVE (JUST NO!!!)
Is there a particular phrase that makes you grind your teeth any time you read it, or a plot point that makes you want to throw your book against the wall? <-- "Ever since I first met you I knew that you were special." *bangs head on a brick wall in absolute pain at just writing this down*

1. The best bad guy/ girl/ person for me is probably Sophie from The School For Good and Evil, but that's not YA, so... President Snow (The Hunger Games)? Or maybe Caine Soren from Gone... hmmmmmm. Also, the protag I hate is... probably Shade, from Monster. She makes me go AAAAAAAAAAAAA inside and wants to throw the book against the wall.
2. Never reread.
3. When the story follows a person that can't help falling in love with someone who's trouble, then the bad one starts loving them back, then the protag gains their senses and goes for the friend that likes them. Also as sylvs said, instant attraction (AAAAAAAAA). Also, I hate it when a story has just TOO MANY BOOKS. Like, books are great, but sometimes the author just has to know when to let it go... Does that count? Otherwise, when there's a cringey teen moment and the protag is like "do I kiss them, do I hold their hand, etc" and then nothing happens and the date is over and the protag is kicking themself for not doing anything.

1. James Adams from Cherub. He's the main character, but I really hate him.
2. No brainer! Never reread ever again!
3. My most hated trope is the fat girl. They're either really into food, or hate themselves. No inbetween.
