Party time!

Breaking the ice for our new arrivals

A whale rises up out of the ocean, waving a fin. Text underneath reads "whale hello there"

Welcome to members old and new! Party time posts are an opportunity to congregate, meet each other and share a bit more about our mutual book obsessions.

If you’re new, don’t be afraid to comment and introduce yourself to other members. This is a friendly corner of the internet where mutual obsessions and fandoms of all things book reign supreme. If you’re into reading and writing, you’ve found your people here.

This time I’m giving a word, image and sound challenge for everyone. As always, you can respond to one or all three:

Image

a row of books slowly falls one by one

Shelfie time! Show us your bedside table reading stack, your bookshelves, your library haul, your cutest covers collection… (remember to follow the instructions below the comments box to make sure the picture loads properly!)

Word

Over the next few weeks on Instagram I’m going to be sharing my word of the week. I love playing with language and discovering new words to describe our inner and outer worlds. Share one of your favourite words or a word you’ve just discovered recently… who knows, I might feature it on my feed!

Sound

Image of African Americal man wearing glasses sitting in a chair. Words beneath him read "rap is poetry"

Prep that playlist, it’s time to talk musical inspiration. What do you listen to when you write? What song reminds you of your favourite book? Have you discovered a musician through a book you read? How does music influence your reading or writing?

I’m looking forward to reading all your responses, particularly from any lurkers who want to come out of the woodwork 😉

Hi I'm Sylvs! I don't specifically have a singer I listen to when writing (I have so many singers to listen to for different books I am writing) but basically because lots of my stories feature action and fantasy, I like songs that have this epic bass drop or just sounds like it would be amazing on a movie soundtrack. (I personally recommend BTS songs ;)) I guess a musician I discovered while reading was Journey and their song Don't Stop Believing (Leah on the Offbeat) I knew the song but didn't know who sang it. Music helps sorts my head out: if I have a great idea I can play the idea out like a movie with a awesome soundtrack behind it :D

Hello I'm Jade! My favorite word is Obstreperous. It means noisy and difficult to control. For me its a funny word, because my friends have tried saying it and fail miserably. ( I pronounce it ob-strep-orus)

A word I love: serendipity. Aka - my username but without the twist. It's just so smooth and nice sounding and makes me calm.
Here's a photo of my bookshelf - yes that is a slytherin 20th edition HP book :)

Did you use the img tag correctly? remember it's

img src="" / (make sure to add the angle brackets)

Make sure you right click on the original image, right click, click copy image address and then paste it in between the quotation marks.

ladybird

Hi!! I’m ladybird and my favorite word would have to be rain (the sound, feel and look of the word, and the sound, feel and look of the actual thing). When writing I usually just listen to my normal playlist. When I’m stuck, I usually write about how the song feels, or a story that follows the feeling and lyrics of the song. This works pretty well for drawing too. I also listen to ambient music or rain if I need to focus hard.

I love the smell of rain

Ooh that sounds nice! I play netball and on our first day of training for the year it started raining and cause the courts were wet we had to stop half way through but the rain felt nice.

Yeah it doesn't matter if it's raining in hockey. We play unless there's lightning. I would not want to be on a hockey field in a lightning storm.

I make epic long playlists for any particular story I'm writing which can include everything from My Chemical Romance to George Gershwin to set the mood juuust right

Welcome to the newbies! I'm Erin (I go by E usually) and my favourite word is eucatastrophe because you hear the word 'catastrophe' and think oh no, but eucatastrophe actually refers to a happy ending of a story :) I can't listen to music while I read, but I draw a lot of writing inspiration from music. My latest favourites are 'lovely' by Billie Ellish and Khalid, 'Dazed & Confused' by Ruel and 'Pyschopath' by Charlotte Lawrence.

Ruelle makes great music that goes under appreciated!

Ello guys! I’m birde and I have three bookshelves in my bedroom (a good portion are books I used read as a little kid and I don’t want to throw them out).
I love the sound of the word ‘symphony’, including as a full music orchestra.
I don’t have any specific music I listen to when I write, but artists like Sam Smith, George Ezra, Jess Glynne, OneRepublic, The Lumineers and X Ambassadors write absolute bangers!
Don’t know whether u guys already know this song, but ‘Village by Wrabel’, is a beautiful anthem for the LGBTQI+ community. Give it a listen!

Hello! My name is Ben and you can see a part of my bookshelf on my profile page. My favourite word is either 'antidisestablishmentarianism' which refers to the action of being against the disestablishment of something (whew!) or 'sing', which is just so relaxing to say! I listen to a lot of music, but I mainly listen to Broadway musicals and movies and also Troye Sivan.
