‘Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.’ – Groucho Marx

His Dark Materials Adaptation!

Have you watched episode one yet? I’m saving it for the weekend. Will it live up to our expectations? I don’t know!

What I do know is that the HBO- BBC television adaptation of Philip Pullman’s classic series has an amazing cast, wonderful production values, huge budget and early reviews describe it as “gritty” and “uncompromising.” I also know that the novels have been described as impossible to adapt. But then, perhaps the golden age of television changes all of that by offering the opportunity for rendering of this beloved world? My favourite quote about this new series is that it will “Warm the cockles of your heart while chilling you to the bone.” Because of course, that would be perfect.

The books are dark and wondrous and terrifying. I mean, can you ever look at a golden monkey the same way again? This fantasy series is memorable for so many reasons, one being the depth of orld building that explores religion, philosophy, physics and power. And that world is now expanded with Philip Pullman writing another series set in the same world, The Book of Dust. The makers of the television series are using all the books to inform the adaptation.

“Based on author Philip Pullman’s beloved trilogy, His Dark Materials follows Lyra, a brave young woman from another world. Lyra’s quest to find her kidnapped friend leads her to uncover a sinister plot of a secret organization, encounter extraordinary beings and protect dangerous secrets.”

The cast includes James McEvoy as Lord Asriel, Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter and Dafne Keen as Lyra.

I can’t wait to watch it!

I was really hanging out to see this one - but unfortunately it’s only out on Foxtel I think and our family doesn’t have that! I hope they put it on DVDs.
