‘Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.’ – Groucho Marx

Happy IDAHOBIT 2018!

No, it isn’t a hobbit thing. It’s International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia.

Inside a Dog is a queer friendly, anti-hate space. We celebrate our LGBTQI+ members and stand against discrimination against this community today and every day.

Here is a booklist of some current LGBTQI+ exceptional reads:

Here are a few from our 2018 Inky Awards longlist…

Cover of the book The gentleman's guide to vice and virtue

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

This rollicking tale of highborn hijinx on a trip around Europe is a queer love story with a whole lot of adventure.

Ida by Alison Evans

Parallel universes, home and identity are central to this tale of non-binary Ida, a twenty-something with unique abilities.

Take Three Girls by Cath Crowley, Fiona Wood and Simmone Howell

Three unlikely allies come together in the face of rumour and gossip at their all-girls boarding school. All are looking for a sense of belonging, a way to express themselves and integrity in their lives. How hard can it be?

Outside of the 2018 Inky Awards list there have also been some excellent LGBTQI+ releases lately. Some of my highlights are…

Cover of Amelia Westlake

Amelia Westlake by Erin Gough

If you loved The Flywheel (and who didn’t?!), you won’t be disappointed by Erin Gough’s second novel. This one takes place in a private girls school where rebellion, hoaxes and pranks are acts of political rebellion.

Cover of the book Songs that sound like blood

Songs that Sound Like Blood by Jared Thomas

This is a #loveozya title featuring an Aboriginal woman making the transition from her high school life in her small home town to a new city, new life at university and a whole new set of challenges.

The Dangerous Art of Blending In by Angelo Surmelis

Warning: this book will make you cry. It will crawl deep inside your heart and make a home there. I haven’t stopped thinking about this tale of fractured families and the danger of trying to shrink so small you can’t be seen.

We have a few other LGBTQI+ themed booklists too. There’s the Genre #AusQueerYA titles list and LGBTQIA realism list. You can also check out our LGBTQI+ tagged books.

If you identify as LGBTQI+ Sheri has set up a blog especially for you! You’re welcome to join as a contributor, just comment on this post and ask to be part of the team.

So happy IDAHOBIT everyone. I hope your day is filled with rainbows.
