This is a harrowing story of how a 12 year old girl falls between the cracks of our welfare system. Sophie is 12 when she is thrown into the system after the death of her mother. It is also when she stops going to school. After the system consistently beats her down, Sophie meets a drug-dealer. Spiral is a 'home kid' as well but he has bigger plans and Sophie is drawn to him.
Sophie is crying out for help, but there is no-one to listen or care.
I have shelved this book in our Adult Reading section in my secondary school. We made that decision on the violence, drug-taking and strong language contained in the story.
Having said that it is a book that every adult should read.
