The Girl: Clio Ford, seventeen, wants to spend the summer smooching her art-store crush, not stuckRead Review
Skulduggery Pleasant; wise cracking detective, powerful magician, master of dirty tricks and burglary (in the name of the greater good, of course), oh yeah, and dead!
Stephanie's uncle Gordon is a writer of horror fiction. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror, it certainly wasn't fiction.
Pursued by evil forces intent on recovering a mysterious key, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source – the wisecracking skeleton of a dead wizard.
When all hell breaks loose, it's lucky for Skulduggery that he's already dead. Though he's about to discover that being a skeleton doesn't stop you from being tortured, if the torturer is determined enough. And if there's anything Skulduggery hates, it's torture…
Will evil win the day? Will Stephanie and Skulduggery stop bickering long enough to stop it? One thing's for sure: evil won't know what's hit it.
An amazing book, the jokes are great! It is the perfect blend of comedy, action and story. One of the best fiction books out their
this book is amazing, realy good characters with lots of depth and great lines, tiss series is amazing and iSTRONGLY recomend it, one of my favorate ever! must read!!!!!
I have to honestly say this is a great and excellent book. Must reccomend reading.
Skulduggery Pleasant is just one of Derek Landy’s fantastic novels. This book is the first book in the series. It is a very descriptive book and it is an intriguing series that enters the world of fantasy. This novel broadens the reader’s imagination and shows the journey of Stephanie and Skulduggery.
The author that wrote the first Skulduggery Pleasent is Derek Landy. His writing style suits fantasy really well. He has created characters that really suit the genre such as one of the main characters Skulduggery Pleasant, who is a skeleton and can control the 4 elements of the world because he is a mage which is like a wizard but they don’t have to look like a wizard.
This book has a really great mix of fantasy elements and reality, lots of the characters are perfectly normal, ordinary humans that have recently found out that there are fantastical things in their world. While some other characters like Skulduggery ‘With his sunglasses gone there was no denying the fact he had no face. All he had was a skull for a head’ he is unrealistic and is made to be fantastical.
The characters are really strange in this story because a lot of them are left quite mysterious and we don’t find out much about them. For example the parents and Gordon who has died recently in the book (not a spoiler). I don’t really like the settings in this book because sometimes it is too descriptive which leaves you a bit confused. ‘She lifted the title page and carefully laid it face down on the desk beside the manuscript.’
Meet Skulduggery Pleasant. He’s a detective, magician and a warrior.
Oh yes, he's also dead.
Skulduggery Pleasant, by Derek Landy is about a dead man who refuses to stay that way. He is a living skeleton, who uses a mere coat, hat and scarf to hide his looks from the people of the world.
After her Uncle Gordon’s death, twelve year old Stephanie Edgley, being his favourite niece, inherits all his money and property, much to the disgust of her other aunt and uncle. While at the reading of the will, Stephanie finds herself being drawn to the mysterious, evasive and alluring Skulduggery Pleasant. But there is more than meets the eye here and Stephanie is tossed into a world of magic and danger as Serpine, an evil sorcerer searches for an ancient artefact, the Sceptre of Ancients, one that he believes Stephanie’s uncle had in his possession. The Sceptre of Ancients can be lethal when fallen into the wrong hands. Now Stephanie and Skulduggery must race to stop him from causing another war from breaking out. As more and more family secrets come to light, Stephanie is overwhelmed and fights to keep her feet in her ever changing world.
Skulduggery Pleasant is a common fantasy story told with uncommon characters. The plot is standard fantasy fare, with an object of terrible power that can destroy the world and, you guessed it, a group of heroes that end up saving the world. What makes this book stand out are the characters. Stephanie is a pre-teen girl who is suddenly thrusted into a world of wonder, magic and danger. She is the person who readers can step into the shoes of and be part of the story. Also, Skulduggery plays an important role. He is also the main character whom the idea of magic revolves around. He is also sarcastic and can throw a one-liner with deadly accuracy. The banter between Stephanie and Skulduggery is the most amusing part of the book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Derek Landy has made the book dark, tense, thrilling and very engaging. Also, the book is exciting, fast-paced, nicely handled and fun. It has I would definitely recommend this book for anyone of any age to read, but I would especially recommend it for readers who like mystery and dry humour.
