The Godfather is an extraordinary novel which has become a modern day classic. Puzo pulls us inside the violent society of the Mafia and its gang wars.

The leader, Vito Corleone, is the Godfather. He is a benevolent despot who stops at nothing to gain and hold power. His command post is a fortress on Long Island from which he presides over a vast underground empire that includes the rackets, gambling, bookmaking, and unions. His influence runs through all levels of American society, from the cop on the beat to the nation's mighty.

Mario Puzo, a master storyteller, introduces us to unforgettable characters, and the elements of this world explode to life in this violent and impassioned chronicle.

Review

The Godfather is an excellent novel. The Author Mario Puzo really paints a vivid picture in this novel. The genre of this novel is mafia/crime. This novel is set in New York, 1945. In the book the time shifts to the 1950s. The Godfather is about a powerful Italian-American crime family of Don Vito Corleone. The Don and his family encounter many issues which could be the end of the Corleones.

Mario Puzo creates some amazing characters in this novel. The storyline mainly focuses around the family, therefore the main characters are Don Vito Corleone, Sonny Corleone, Michael Corleone and Tom Hagen. I really like Don Corleone as he is the King of his world, he is in total control of everything. This is why I idolise the Don. I also really like Sonny Corleone because when the Don gets in trouble Sonny has to take over the family. He takes on the responsibility as head of the family well. Sonny has severe anger issues which sometimes gets him into a lot of trouble. I like the way Mario Puzo doesn't make all the characters perfect which makes them more realistic. I dislike one of the characters, this character is Sollozo the Turk. I dislike him as he is the main threat the Corleones face. Sollozo orders the death of the Don which I was very upset about. Luckily the Don survived.

I liked the way Mario Puzo wrote this novel, he shares all the minor details and paced the novel well. Although the novel is slow paced at the start Puzo still keeps you interested. Mario Puzo uses excellent word choice and sentence flow in this novel. Using words like 'patronisingly' which ties one of the sentences together.

I was really moved when Michael killed Sollozo and the chief of police. I was shocked that Michael had the guts to sacrifice everything to save the family. I was infuriated when Michael had to vanish from New York as it was to dangerous for him. Michael had to be shipped to Sicily as he was in grave danger in America. This book would appeal to the adult audiences as it is violent and in some areas inappropriate. I really like this book as it is written extraordinarily well and is very engaging. I rate this book 5/5.

The Godfather

Authored by: Mario Puzo

Genre: Action/Thriller/crime

Setting: New York, America

Plot: The Corleone family mafia have its wars with the other gangs and who can they trust?

Main Characters: Vito Corleone, Michael Corleone, Sonny Corleone, Fredo Corleone and Kay-Adams. Vito Corleone is the head of the family mafia and the Godfather. The most interesting characters would have to be Michael and Vito Corleone. Michael is the son of Vito Corleone. I couldn't relate to any of the characters because it is such a unique story. I disliked Kay-Adams, I found her annoying because she was so paranoid about the mafia brainwashing Michael.

The Authors craft: I didn't dislike anything about the book, although it was very long. I really liked the authors dramatic writing and the way he describes the mafia and the people. The most famous quote in this book is by Vito Corleone which is "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse".

Themes and characters: what really moved me was Michaels motivation and dedication. For example his father told him to move to Sicily for a very long time for the sake of being safe and Michael did not have any family with him.

Audience: this book might appeal to someone who loves action and gang wars

Rating: 4 and a half out of 5
