Title: The Mortal Instruments book one City of Bones
Author: Cassandra Clare
Publisher: Walker Books Ltd
Publication date: 2007

Setting: New York City Characters:
Clary, Simon, Jace, Alec, Isabelle, Valentine, Jocelyn,
Conflict/Plot:

A girl named Clarissa (Clary) Fray begins to see things that nobody else can. She discovers that the reason is because she belongs to a group of half-angel, half-human demon hunters called Shadowhunters, whose purpose is to rid the earth of demons. One day Clary’s mother, Jocelyn, is taken by an evil Shadowhunter, named Valentine, and in order to get her back, Clary must try and look inside of herself and find new abilities which neither she or anyone else knew that she had. But she is not alone on this journey the three teenage Shadowhunters that she met the night that she began seeing things, Jace, Alec and Isabelle, are there to help her find her mother. Without her mother, Clary begins to see the world in a different way; full of vampires, faeries, werewolves and warlocks.

The best thing about this book is that there are FIVE more to read in the series! The end of the book was my favourite because it was not predictable and changes EVERYTHING! The thing that I didn’t like about the book was that some things were difficult to understand because they weren’t explained very well at the start so you have to figure it out by yourself. I highly recommend this book to people that liked reading the Twilight series because both books have romance and they are fantasy fiction. I also think it is like The Hunger Games because there is a bit of romance and violence. I think that this book is appropriate for people ages 12+ because if you were any younger, you wouldn’t be able to understand what is happening and the violence and ideas might scare you.

City of Bones

The novel City of Bones is one of a world that very interesting and always has you intrigued. The main character Clary has been living a life that turns out to be a lie. Not really knowing the true identity of her mum and her mothers boyfriend. As she goes on her journey to find who she truely is she finds love, new friendships and secrets that had been kept from her for so many years. Her self discovery is not completed and she has yet so much more to learn about herself and her past.

I personally loved the book. I think it is a story that leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat. There is a bit of a love triangle between main character Clary, Jace the shadowhunter and best friend Simon. What made me like the book so much was the fact that its is rather different to the ones that I usually read. I think that it is a book for the age range 12+ as some of the content can be hard to understand. The author Cassandra Clare did an amazing job creating the story and outline of this book. She did it in a way that it almost seemed realistic and you could easily put the image in your head. I would rate this book 4 stars as it does have a little bit of space for improvement.
