1. While watching the YouTube video I found out that Michael Morpurgo was inspired to write the book 'Shadow' after hearing about a real life story about an Australian black Labrador sniffer dog used in Afghanistan by Australian soldiers. This dog had gone missing after an ambush. Over a year later the dog met another group of soldiers. Michael thought about how the dog could have survived living on its own and came to the conclusion that someone else would have looked after it. He had also seen a play about asylum seekers that were kept in a prison in England waiting to be brought back to their original country. He eventually put the 2 stories together and that is what inspired his to write Shadow.
2. Bomb sniffer dogs are trained by using food and toy rewards, Labradors are used because of their lack of aggression. The dog is trained to recognise over 1000 ingredients that might be used in bomb. In the beginning, the dog gets taught to sit when he finds the scent and gradually works it's way up from there.
3. The Mujahidin Freedom fighters were fighters from the mountains of mostly rural countries. They rebelled against Mohammed, who was the president of the DRA (Democratic Republic of Afghanistan) in the 1970's.
4. In Australia, they let the asylum seekers that meet the criteria of a refugee stay if it's a matter of life or death or if their freedom is at risk. Also, Australia doesn't send back people who are at risk of violation of their human rights, although Australia only accepts a certain amount of people who are refugees each year. Asylum seekers that come to Australia by boat without a visa are moved to a third country as soon as possible unless the minister for immigration lets them stay.
this is what I did as the role of Connector
Hello group. This is what I did as vocabulary enricher.
today I answers the vocabulary questions
Today I had the job of literary luminary
today I was the predictor.
in the upcoming chapters of the book I predict that Matt and grandpa will have the protest and free the kids and aman and his mother.
Today I was the predictor. My role was to predict what was going to happen next in the book. I think Aman and his mum will get back on the lorry and get to know more of the people there. I think they will get especially close with the parents of the kid that died and the old couple from Kabul. I think they will be in the lorry for a few more days but they will get to England safely.
these were the connections I made from our second session
today I completed the vocabulary enriched.
Hi group, this one is a little late.
today I was the vocabulary enricher. I found some pretty interesting words.
In the book "shadow" I think what will happen next is that aman and his mother will find lots of money on the ground and start having really good luck, I think they will get to England and then later in the book they will end up seeing Matt and when they are older they will be bestfriends for ever.
Hello shadow group, this it what I did in the first reading group

Hi 8I Readers!
You all began reading so well in your groups today, you should be really pleased with how you have started! I will be very interested to see how you have all responded to your books so far. I wonder if you are enjoying it so far? Maybe it isn't what you thought it would be? Have any parts surprised you yet? Maybe it is exactly what you expected?
Please reply to this post by answering some of my questions above and letting me know your initital thoughts about the book that you are reading in your group. Everybody will have different answers as we all have different opinions about things. This should be really interesting to see the different opinions.
Keep up the great work 8I.
