Michael is the author of many books, from picture books to YA. His first novel Running Man won the 2005 Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year for Older Readers. In 2006 Michael’s Ishmael series was launched with, Don’t call me Ishmael. A group of Grade nines take on the school bullies, bugs, babes and more culminating in the most exciting year of their life. By 2010 Michael had firmly cemented his place in Australian literary history. His book Just a Dog was recognised as a CBCA Honour Book and also won the QLD Premier’s Award.
2012 saw a new character from Michael and one of his most popular, Eric Vale. Eric is a boy who is plagued with an anything but a cool nickname, Epic Fail. Determined to put an end to a rotten run of bad luck and shake off his nickname Eric will try just about anything. 2013 saw two new Eric Vale books released, Eric Vale Super Male and Eric Vale Off the Rails.
Michael’s books are currently sold in over 20 countries including the USA and the UK and have been translated into 11 languages including German, French and Korean. Michael refuses to budge from his birthplace and currently resides with his wife Adriana in Ashgrove, Qld.
