The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries burst into pop culture consciousness in the early 90s as part of LJ Smith's book series. In 2009 Dawson's Creek creator Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec created a television version.
Who had read the books prior to the television series? How loyal is the tv version?
And who read the series having already watched some of the television show?
Did Williamson improve on the written word, or has he damaged a book series?
Differences?
- Bonnie's a red head.
- Elena's a not-so-nice gal with blonde hair.
- Jeremy doesn't exist...in fact, his counterpart is a much younger sister.
What else...

I read the books (the original copies, not the re-released ones) before I watched the series, and I can say that I was very peeved that a lot of changes have been made.
Most notably:
Despite these changes, I do enjoy the watching the show.
However, I was quite disappointed when I read the latest books LJ Smith wrote for the series. They're far longer than the original books (the new ones are the length of two original ones) and seem to drag on for far too long.
I've also heard that she will be writing an extra three books. I'm looking forward to seeing how she will continue on despite the last three books ended the series well enough.
I have never ever ever read this book so i wouldnt know but is it worth reading???
