I loved this book and have read it 6 times, it is my favourite book that i have ever read. The whole book is great but when they are on the island fighting and searching for the treasure, the book makes you feel like you are there. I don't think there were any bad bits in the book, and i would recomend this book to people above 8, because of the killing and you need to be able to understand what happens in the book.
I think the author wrote this book because he became influenced by someone of a younger age who liked pirates. Some ideas that the author is tryind to raise is, you can not trust anyone who is not part of your family, refering to Long John Silver and there are dangeres in the world. There wouldnt be any other books i would compare it to because i haven't read a book like it. It really isnt written for a particular age range, just for people above 8.
