Young Willie Beech is evacuated to the country as Britain stands on the brink of Second World War. a sad, deprived child, he slowly begins to flourish under the care of old Tom Oakley-but his new- found glory is shattered by summons from his mother back in London
Goodnight Mr Tom is an exciting and emotional book. For me once I started reading I couldn't stop until it had been a least 20 minutes. The book is about a boy called Will who has to be evacuated from his home and moved to a country town where he has two stay with a gruff old man that soon begins to soffen up. Will then becomes a great friend of many people in his village. One day his mother sends a letter him saying that she wants him back. Will goes, but after a week with no response Mr Tom goes looking for him. I don't want to spoil the story so I'll leave it there. I would say this book is for children around 10 - 12 years old. Over all I think it is a great book and would definitely put it on my favourite book list.
One of the best books ever.
I loved it- once I started reading I couldn't stop and I had finished it in about three nights.
The development of the characters and plot is outstanding. I cried, cheered and shivered and I am sure you will too. Definitely worth any praise it is given!
I rated this 5/5 (a rating it deserves) because it was not just a typical war story (like many books set in that time and area) and Michelle Magorian wrote the book spectacularly. The best part was how the two main characters changed throughout the book.
Try it, you'll like it!
Goodnight Mr. Tom is a great book for ages 14-16. It shows a story of a young boy and his child-abusing mother but that is where Mr. Tom comes in to turn his life around. As this process happens to turn him into a full strong farm boy the magnificent story line introduces new characters, problems and positive and negative experiences that the main character, willy takes in. this book also tells a story of real life problems making the readers relies how hard it must be to experience these. All in all this book has all the positives that a good book should have and was hard to put down.
