The Infernal Devices trilogy, a prequel to bestselling The Mortal Instruments trilogy, follows 16-year-old orphan Tessa Gray, whose quiet life is thrown into turmoil when her older brother Nathaniel suddenly vanishes, leaving her alone. Tessa's search for him leads her to England during the reign of Queen Victoria, into London's dangerous underworld, where warlocks throw masked balls for half-demon Downworlders and vampires and supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets.
When the friendless and hunted Tessa discovers that she herself is a Downworlder, she must learn to trust her natural enemies, the demon-killing Shadowhunters, if she ever wants to learn to control her powers and find her brother. Drawn ever deeper into their world, she finds herself fascinated by – and torn between – two best friends; beautiful Will, a Shadowhunter hiding a deadly secret, and the devoted Jem, whose addiction to a demon drug is slowly destroying him. Tessa quickly realises that love may be the most dangerous magic of all and must draw on all her strength to save her brother and keep herself alive in this deadly new world.
Clockwork Angel is the first book in The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare. The Infernal Devices series are a prequel to her other bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments.
The story begins in Victorian London, when the main protagonist, 16 year-old Tessa Grey, journeys to London to visit her brother. Upon arrival, two people who call themselves the ‘Dark Sisters’ kidnap Tessa and reveal to her that she is not the seemingly ordinary human she thought she was. Threatened by the Dark Sisters to show them her skill, Tessa realised that she has the ability to ‘Change’ into any other person by holding an object that they have or is representing of the person.
After being held captive in the Dark Sister’s home for many weeks, the day when Tessa is meant to be collected by the mysterious Majester, an even more mysterious man called Will rescues Tessa. She is swooped away again into a new world, seeking refuge with a race that are called Shadowhunters – beings which are half angel and half human – whose duty is to protect the human race from Downworlders (vampires, werewolves, warlocks and demons). The Shadowhunters soon discover that the Majester has an evil plan to rid the world of all Shadowhunters and take over.
In the midst of all the danger and chaos, Tessa finds herself falling in love with not one, but TWO handsome Shadowhunters who both find Tessa irresistible. Tessa must both save the world and come to terms with the desires of her heart.
Reading this series is a must! It entranced me from the very first page and pulled me into a magical realm that I loved. I loved the way Cassandra Clare writes. I was entangles into Tessa and the Shadowhunters lives, and I loved to learn all about their powers and hear their secrets. I loved Clockwork Angel and I’d give it a score of 8 out of 10.
Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. Normally I don't try to associate myself with these kind of novels that have the love aspect in it as much as the rest of the themes. However, when I read the Mortal Instruments series I noticed that there was all of this love/passion stuff going on between Jace and Clary, there is still just as much action, demon destroying, monster bashing fun that I can't deny that I love to read.
The story is set in the time of Queen Victoria and in my own opinion, this setting difference and the plot are the two things that differ between the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series. You stil get all of the stuff you love from Cassandra Clare just with the twist from the past.
I rate this book 3/5 because despite enjoying it a lot, it just wasn't as good as the Mortal Instrument's series. Cassandra Clare set the bar too high in her early books and now she has to level the playing field.
An absolute masterpiece from Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Angel tells the story of Tessa Gray, a young girl who journeys from America to meet her brother, who finds herself in the world of mystery and magic. She is kidnapped by vicious ladies called the Dark Sisters. Tessa finds that she has a strange talent and that she can transform and have the appearance of someone else, living or dead. She is rescued by a gorgeous boy and taken to the Institute. It is there that she meets the rest of the Shadowhunters, demon hunters who welcome her. The mysteries that surround her brother's disappearance and her strange abilities. When several bodies are found around London, the Shadowhunters and Tessa try to solve the mystery and find the killer. But will the killer find them first?
Wonderfully written and historically accurate, Clockwork Angel is an incredible read and a real page-turner. A must for any fan of fantasy!
i love this book. i borrowed it from a library after reading some of the mortal instruments series and fell in love immedietly. you will too if you dare face the horrors of the world Jem, Will and Tessa live in...
I love this book it follows on from the mortal intruments series perfectly. I love the connect the characters in this book have with the characters from the mortal instrument series. If you haven't read it yet you should, especially if you've already read the mortal instruments series.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! It is even better than the mortal instruments series, i think. it captures just the right amout of romance and fantasy and adventure. i have read it at least 5 times and it never loses its amazingness. one i put my nose in this book, it is stuck there until i have read every last word on every page from cover to cover. i am cassandra clare's biggest fan.
