Supanova - 50,000 Enthusiastic People in Packed Halls of Awesome
“Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.” – Simon Pegg
I’m just back from two massive weekends in Sydney and Perth for the Supanova Pop Culture Expo.
Some 50,000 people crammed into these events; all lovers of comics, sci-fi, fantasy, TV, film, books and anime.

For me, one of the single greatest things about these events is seeing so many people openly displaying their passion for the things they love. It’s a safe, joyous environment where everything is celebrated. Harrys and Hermiones proudly walk the halls side-by-side with superheroes and Sailor Moons. Bronies dance with Trekkies and Whovians fight off lightsabers with their sonic screwdrivers.

So, you’re a guy who likes My Little Pony? Awesome! This girl dressed as Thor wants to put down her hammer, give you a hug and scream ‘friendship is magic!’ while a guy dressed in a life-size spongebob squarepants costume takes a photo of you.
If you've never been to one of these events, you have to get to one (and leave your cynicism at the door).
I'll be blogging more about these events tomorrow, including a bit of chat about my fellow guests (including authors), and posting a bunch of photos from the event.
But, for now, I'm signing off.
